Are you getting the most out of your supplements?

With the right information, it can be easy to determine whether your supplements are high quality whole food vitamins or synthetic.  Check the label of your supplements and see how they measure up!

Ingredients:

Whole food vitamins will list the names of real whole foods on the label, like brown rice or acerola cherries.

Synthetic vitamins will list only chemical names, indicating the source is questionable and the co-factors are missing!  If a source is not given, assume it is synthetic.
These terms also identify a vitamins as synthetic:
acetate
bitartrate
chloride
gluconate
hydrochloride
nitrate
succinate

Recommended Daily Value:

More is better, right?  Not necessarily when it comes to supplements.  A whole food vitamin will often have a low potency, this is because a minute amount of a vitamin in its whole food form is more effective nutritionally than a large amount of a synthetic one.

Synthetic vitamins are often found in mega-dosages (check your B vitamins!)  This sort of dosing of isolated vitamins without their co-factors can be dangerous to certain populations (children, elderly and immune compromised persons) and should more accurately be called a drug.  High dosages of synthetic vitamins can lead to an over-dose of isolated factors and deficiencies of co-factors as your body tries to rebuild this 'dead' nutrient.

Beyond the Label:

Also important are questions about where the ingredients come from, are they organic, how and when are they processed and are the vital co-factors retained?  This information is relatively difficult to determine unless you know something about the manufacturer.
